The dryer is the deadline.

If one red sock has tinted a pale load, do not make a second mistake by drying it. Separate the source, keep the affected pieces wet and treat the transfer while the dye is still mobile.

Bleeding, transfer and fading

  • Bleeding is dye leaving its original fabric into the wash water.
  • Dye transfer is that mobile colour attaching to another item.
  • Fading is colour lost from the original fabric, whether or not it visibly stains something else.

A single wash can do all three. The dark garment fades, its dye bleeds, and a light garment receives the transfer. The pale item is not “dirty” in the ordinary sense; it has acquired a new dye stain, which is why another normal wash may not be enough.

What to do immediately

  1. Stop before the dryer. Heat and drying time can make removal harder.
  2. Find and isolate the source. Do not put the unstable item back with the affected load.
  3. Check every care label. Group affected items by the hottest safe water and permitted bleach symbol.
  4. Rewash promptly with detergent. Use the warmest temperature all the affected labels allow and do not overload the drum.
  5. Inspect while wet. Repeat a safe treatment only if colour is still moving; do not iron or dry until you have finished.

If detergent alone does not work, use a commercial colour-run remover or oxygen bleach only when its label and the garment's bleach symbol permit it. Test first. Chlorine bleach can destroy colour, wool, silk and elastane, and the Smithsonian warns that it weakens even cotton and linen over time. Multicoloured garments are especially risky because a treatment safe for the white panel may strip the printed one.

Do not improvise a chemistry experiment. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, alcohol or another cleaner. Follow one product label at a time, rinse fully, and stop if the garment itself begins to lose colour.

A home colourfastness test

The University of Georgia's textile guidance uses a blotting test: place a few drops of the water you intend to use on an inconspicuous area, allow it to penetrate, then press with a clean white cloth or absorbent paper. Repeat several times. If no colour transfers, repeat with the diluted detergent solution.

This is useful but not a guarantee. A tiny hidden seam is exposed for seconds; a whole garment is exposed to more solution, more movement and more time. Test each colour in a multicoloured piece separately.

Why new dark clothes are different

Some garments carry unattached surface dye from manufacture. Others use dyes with genuinely poor wash fastness. Both can colour the first wash, but only the second continues to be a problem. Wash new, saturated reds, blues, purples and blacks separately for the first few cycles. Cooler water and lower mechanical action slow dye movement, but they cannot make an unstable dye permanent.

Indigo denim is deliberately ring dyed: abrasion removes blue from the outside of the yarn. Its gradual colour loss is part of the material, not the same failure as a red blouse staining a white shirt.

When to stop

Repeated treatment also stresses fabric and prints. Stop when no more transferred colour is coming away, when the original colour starts to change, or when the care label rules out the next product. A valuable, tailored, silk, wool or multicoloured garment is a professional cleaner's problem before it becomes a damaged-garment problem.
