Laundry problem
White streaks after washing are not always detergent.
Four different things can leave the same pale mark on black clothes. Adding more detergent fixes one of them and makes two of the others worse.

Start with the texture

A residue is not proof that you used too much detergent. In hard water, too little detergent can also leave clothes grey and stiff because there is not enough product to deal with minerals and keep soil suspended. That is why “always use half the dose” is as unreliable as filling the cap to the top.
The four variables behind a dose
The correct amount is a relationship between load size, soil level, water hardness and product concentration. The bottle or box is the starting point because two liquids that look identical can contain very different amounts of active material. Then adjust only for a reason you can name.
- Larger or dirtier load: move up the product's own scale.
- Hard water: use the hard-water instruction on the pack. Your water utility can usually tell you the local hardness.
- Small or lightly worn load: use the lower mark, not the standard one.
- High-efficiency machine: use detergent labelled for that machine. Excess foam can interfere with rinsing even when the clothes look dramatically “soapy”.
Foam is not a cleaning meter. Suds show that air has been trapped in a surfactant film. They do not tell you how much soil has been removed, and more visible foam can mean a harder rinse.
Why overloading looks like overdosing
Powder needs water and movement to dissolve. Clothes need room for the wash liquor to circulate and carry loosened soil away. Pack the drum tightly and the same measured dose is distributed through less free water, trapped in folds and given fewer routes out during the rinse. Before blaming the product, check whether you can place an open hand above a dry front-loader load and whether the items can actually tumble.
Fix the current load safely
- Do not dry or iron marked clothes; inspect them while damp.
- Run a full rinse or short cycle with no additional detergent or softener.
- If powder residue is recurring, use a warmer temperature only if the care labels allow it, reduce the load, or switch to a compatible liquid.
- If the fabric remains uniformly harsh, check the water-hardness figure and the washer manual before changing the dose.
- Clean the detergent drawer and follow the machine's maintenance cycle if deposits are visible there.
Some institutional guidance uses a dilute vinegar soak for mineral or powder deposits. Never mix acids with chlorine bleach or other cleaning chemicals, and never pour an improvised mixture into a machine. A second water-only rinse is the safest first test and often answers the diagnosis without adding anything.
Prevent the next one
- Measure; do not pour by eye.
- Keep powders dry and break up clumps before dosing.
- Put each product in the compartment specified by the machine manual.
- Wash towels and other lint shedders away from dark synthetic garments.
- Use a full-length cycle for a full or dirty load; quick wash is designed for a small, lightly soiled one.
