Nobody ever checked whether it washes

A “dry clean only” label is not the verdict of someone who put the garment in water to find out what happened. Under the rules that govern care labels, it never had to be.

This is the most useful thing to understand about that tag, and almost nobody says it, so here it is first.

The rule is shorter than you would expect

Care labels in the United States are governed by the Federal Trade Commission's Care Labeling Rule. The sentence that matters, from 16 CFR 423.6, reads:

If either washing or drycleaning can be used on the product, the label need have only one of these instructions.

That is the whole of it. Where a garment could be washed and dry cleaned, the manufacturer picks one and prints it. There is a real obligation attached — the rule requires a reasonable basis for care information, established by testing before sale — but it applies to the instruction they give. Not to the one they leave off. Nobody is required to find out whether the thing washes.

In Europe there is less than that. Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 requires the fibre composition on the tag, the 80% wool, 20% polyamide part, and does not require care instructions at all. The symbols come from EN ISO 3758, a voluntary standard. The European Commission reviewed the question in 2013 and concluded the regulation did not need to cover care labelling, because the voluntary scheme already handled it.

So the tag is partly a technical statement and partly a liability shield. A manufacturer who prints “dry clean only” on everything is never wrong. One who prints “wash at 30 °C” on something that shrinks has a problem, a returns process and a reputation to repair.

What the label is protecting is rarely the fabric

Wool, silk, cotton and linen are all washable materials. People washed them for several centuries before dry cleaning was invented in the 1820s. The fibre is almost never the reason for the label.

What fails is the construction.

Pick up a suit jacket and feel the front panel between your fingers. It is not one layer of cloth. There is interfacing bonded to the inside of the chest and the lapel with a heat-activated adhesive, and that hidden layer is what gives the jacket its shape — the reason it holds a line across the chest instead of hanging like a shirt.

Put that in water and the interfacing and the face fabric shrink by different amounts. The bond between them breaks. The jacket comes out covered in permanent ripples across the chest and lapels that no amount of pressing will flatten. Garment factories run wash tests on fused samples before production specifically to catch this, and it has a name in the trade: delamination, or simply bubbling.

It is not recoverable. Not “looks a bit tired” — the jacket is finished, and it will look wrong from across a room.

The dividing line is how it was built, not what it is made of

Once you know to look at construction rather than fibre, most garments sort themselves.

Viscose deserves its own note, because it is the one that surprises people. Standard viscose has a dry tensile strength of roughly 1.5 to 2.4 grams per denier, and a wet strength of 0.7 to 1.2 — it loses around half its strength the moment it is soaked. A viscose dress can tear under its own weight when you lift it out of the sink. But high-wet-modulus viscose, sold as modal or polynosic, behaves much more like cotton and launders perfectly well. “Viscose” on a label does not tell you which one you have, which is a good argument for testing rather than assuming.

A cashmere jumper has no interfacing, no lining and no structure. There is nothing inside it to come apart. It is a knitted tube, and the only thing that will ruin it is agitation and heat — which is to say, your machine, not water itself. Why that combination is fatal to wool specifically is worth understanding before you try it.

What dry cleaning is genuinely bad at

It is worth being even-handed, because the process has a real blind spot and knowing it changes how you use it.

Dry cleaning solvents are non-polar. They dissolve oil and grease extremely well — better than any domestic wash — and they barely touch anything water-soluble. Sweat, wine, coffee, fruit juice, blood. The trade's own literature puts water-soluble material at the majority of what arrives at the counter.

This is why the person taking your garment in looks it over and treats individual marks by hand, with steam or with tannin formulas, before anything goes near the machine. That part is a human being with a spotting gun. The solvent is not doing it.

It also explains a complaint cleaners hear constantly: a jacket comes back looking clean and still faintly smelling of perspiration. Salt does not dissolve in solvent. It was never going to.

The P is on its way out, in America at least. The EPA finalised a rule in December 2024 phasing out perchloroethylene — perc, the solvent behind the P in the circle. New machines could not use it after mid-2025, spot cleaning and older machines go in 2027, and all dry cleaning by the end of 2034. It is a United States rule and does not bind European cleaners, but it is part of why the F symbol for hydrocarbon solvents and the W symbol for professional wet cleaning are turning up more often. Deciding on the garment in front of you

Two things, in order.

First, look for a crossed-out wash tub. This is the distinction that matters and it is easy to miss. A circle with a P or an F in it says dry cleaning works. That is a statement about dry cleaning. A wash tub with a cross through it is a separate, positive claim that washing will damage the garment — somebody asserted that, and it is worth believing. A label with a circle and no crossed tub has not told you anything about washing at all. Silence is not a prohibition.

Second, test the dye. Damp a white cotton cloth, press it against an inside seam allowance or the inside of a hem, hold it there for a few seconds, and look. Colour on the cloth means the dye is not fast and the garment will bleed onto itself in water — dark blues and reds are the usual offenders. This takes a minute and costs nothing, and it is the single check most likely to save you.

If you decide to wash it

In brief, and the method in full is here — the rinse matters more than the wash.

  • By hand, in a basin, in cool water. Not the machine, even on a delicate cycle — that setting is gentler mainly because it holds less, and a full drum on delicates is not a gentle wash.
  • A few minutes, not a soak. Long immersion is what moves dye and marks silk.
  • Press the water out, never wring. Wringing is concentrated mechanical stress on wet fibres at their weakest.
  • Roll it in a dry towel to take up the bulk of the water.
  • Dry flat, out of sunlight. Hanging a wet knit stretches it permanently under its own weight.

Cool water is doing more work here than it appears to. Heat and agitation together are what felt wool and set stains — the arithmetic behind wash temperature covers why the machine is the risk and the water usually is not.

The short version

  • The label certifies one method. It is not a finding that the others fail.
  • Look at construction, not fibre. Fused and structured garments genuinely cannot be washed.
  • A crossed-out wash tub is a real prohibition. A dry-clean circle on its own is not.
  • Test the dye on an inside seam before committing.
  • Knitwear and most silk survive careful hand washing. Suit jackets do not.
  • Dry cleaning is poor at sweat and wine. The spotting is done by hand, before the machine.

The tailored jacket is the honest exception in all of this, and it is worth ending on. Every other garment in the list is a judgement call you are now equipped to make. That one is not. The label is right, the failure is invisible until it is permanent, and there is nothing to be gained by finding out yourself.
