The dangerous part often starts after the garment is already dry.
A thick towel keeps a cycle running while a light T-shirt beside it is heated and tumbled long past dry. That extra time is where avoidable shrinkage and wear accumulate.

“Shrinkage” is three different failures

This is why one “unshrink clothes” trick cannot work for everything. A relaxed cotton knit, felted wool and heat-aged elastane are physically different problems.
Overdrying is a separate stage
While water remains in a garment, part of the supplied energy is spent evaporating it. Once the garment is dry, that buffer has gone: its temperature rises, and every remaining drum turn adds abrasion without removing more water. The American Cleaning Institute lists overdrying as a direct cause of shrinking, and ENERGY STAR highlights automatic moisture termination as protection against wear from overdrying.
Sort by drying time, not only colour. Towels, denim and sweatshirts stay wet much longer than shirts and synthetics. Drying them together makes the slowest item control how long every other item is heated.
What the dots mean
The tumble-dry symbol is a square containing a circle. One dot means low heat; two dots mean normal heat; a crossed symbol means no tumble drying. Dots do not promise that a garment can survive unlimited time. They set the permitted heat range, while the programme's sensor or timer controls duration.
The settings that reduce risk
- Use sensor drying when available. It stops on moisture rather than an arbitrary time.
- Choose the lowest heat allowed by the label. Low heat may take longer, but it gives heat-sensitive fibres a wider margin.
- Use a strong washer spin when the label allows it. Spinning removes water mechanically. The ACI notes that normal spinning does not itself cause shrinkage and can shorten drying.
- Give the load room to tumble. Air needs to circulate; a packed drum dries unevenly.
- Clean the lint filter after every load. ENERGY STAR identifies this as both an efficiency and safety step.
- Remove slightly damp knits and reshape them. Finish flat when the garment construction calls for it.
Can a shrunken garment be saved?
First identify the mechanism. A cotton T-shirt with mild relaxation may stretch closer to shape while damp, then dry flat to measurements. A wool jumper that has become dense and board-like has felted; conditioner can lubricate it, but it cannot undo the scale interlocking. Wavy waistbands, broken elastic threads or permanent bagging in stretch denim point to elastane damage and are also irreversible.
Do not pull a wet viscose garment aggressively in the hope of restoring length. Viscose is weaker while wet, so the rescue attempt can convert distortion into broken yarns.

- Mixed-weight loads over-dry the quickest items.
- Moisture sensing is safer than guessing a long timer.
