White is a colour description, not a fibre.
A white cotton sheet, white wool jumper and white stretch shirt cannot safely receive the same bleach. The composition label and the pattern of the yellowing come first.

Use the pattern as evidence

Body soil is an oil problem
Skin oil accumulates where fabric stays in contact with the body. If detergent dose, wash time or temperature is too low for the soil level, some remains and oxidises yellow over time. Treat the concentrated areas before the full wash with a compatible liquid detergent or labelled pre-treatment, allow the instructed contact time, and use the warmest complete cycle every care label in the load permits.
Enzyme detergents can help on body soil in washable cotton and many synthetics. They are not a universal white-clothes treatment: protease can attack protein fibres, so use a wool/silk-safe product for those materials.
Read the triangle before choosing bleach
An empty triangle permits any textile bleach; a triangle with diagonal lines permits only non-chlorine oxygen bleach; a crossed triangle forbids bleaching. The symbol tells you what the garment allows, not what a stain requires.
Chlorine bleach is powerful and material-specific. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute warns that it can dissolve silk or wool, weaken and later yellow cotton and linen, and industry guidance warns against it on spandex. Oxygen bleach is gentler but can still alter unstable dyes and finishes. Follow both labels and test a hidden area.
If yellowing appeared because chlorine attacked the fibre, adding more chlorine cannot restore it. Stop and identify the composition before repeating the treatment.
Rust-coloured stains need a different route
Iron and manganese in the water supply can create yellow-brown or orange stains. The American Cleaning Institute explicitly warns not to use sodium hypochlorite bleach on rust because it can intensify the discolouration. Use a fabric-safe rust remover according to its label, or address recurring iron in the water system. This is not a situation for mixing homemade acids and bleach.
A safe diagnosis sequence
- Read the fibre content, bleach symbol and maximum wash temperature.
- Compare stained areas with places that do not touch skin.
- Check whether the change followed one product or affects several loads.
- Rewash body-soil buildup with the correct measured detergent and a full safe cycle.
- Use a permitted whitening or rust product only after identifying which problem it targets.
- Inspect before drying. Stop if the fibre, print or trim changes.
Prevent the slow return
- Wash skin-contact whites before oils have months to oxidise.
- Separate heavily soiled items and do not overload.
- Measure detergent for soil level and water hardness.
- Store only completely clean, completely dry textiles away from direct light and fumes.
- Do not treat every white garment as chlorine-safe.
